ARMSTRONG FAMILY:

The first Armstrongs in Miller county, showed up in the 1840 census, as James Armstong in a family of 4, and John with a family of 17. John was the older and probably the father of James. With these large families you would think they would think the name would grow in every census. I don't know if the Civil War had anything to do with it, but the Armstrongs started dwindling in Miller County about that time. I know they married into the Longs. Perhaps they could answer this question.

James Armstrong married Katherine Reed, 8/31/1837.
Catherine Armstrong married Allen Long, 2/11/1838.
Elizabeth Armstrong married Nicholas Long, 3/28/1843.
Orreney Armstrong married William H. McDonald, 11/10/1839.
(I believe all of these marriages are John Armstrong's children)

1850 census:
Abel W. Armstrong married Malinda Ferguson, 7/4/1837.
Abel Armstrong age 36 (Tenn)
Malinda age 38 (N.C.)
Martha age 13 (Mo)
Jesse age 10 (Mo)
Andrew age 9 (Mo)****
Warren age 7 (Mo)
James age 6 (Mo)
Hugh age 4 (Mo)
Margaret age 2 (Mo)
Mary age 2 months (Mo)
Andrew J. Armstrong married Cornelia K. Carroll, 5/21/1868.****
All of the children being born in Missouri, shows they have been here for at least 13 years. This is probably one of John's sons. He had 8 in the 1840 census and I believe James was his son also, making 9.
