The Caldwell family is in my line. My grandmother was Sarah Burns (Caldwell). The oldest Caldwell, I know of is John Caldwell. He was married to Polly Kinkeade(Kincaid). The Kincaids are said to related to the Chouteau family of St. Louis. The Chouteaus were a very wealthy family of some prestige in the early days of St. Louis. Chouteau Avenue is named after them. John and Polly were married 3/13/1800. John was born 8/7/1782 and died Nov. 22, 1854. Polly was born Nov. 16, 1782 died 1/8/1855. They lived in Washington County. Their daughter Louisiana Caldwell married John H. Stockton, Jan. 4, 1838. The first Caldwell of record in Miller County was James Caldwell. He was here in 1840 in a family of 10. The parents had 1 daughter and 7 boys. I'm going to list Caldwells whose ages fit this census. 1860 census of MILLER County, Glaise Twp. David Caldwell age 35 (Mo) Nancy J. age 31 Mary E. age 12 Joseph H. age 10 Frances age 8 James age 6 Susannah age 4 Nancy J. age 3 Louisa age 2 In 1870 they add 4 more: Jefferson D. age 9 William L. age 8 Lucy A. age 6 Pinkney age 2 David and Nancy's children make up the majority of Caldwells in Miller County. Note the marriages further down in this listing under MILLER COUNTY CALDWELLS. David & Nancy along with several of their children are buried at Dooley Cemetery Samuel Caldwell age 27 (Mo) Julia E. age 30 My favorite Caldwell was "Buck" Caldwell. He was my grandmother's brother. Buck liked to drink a beer or two and he would rather fight, than here a pretty woman sing. These two characteristics keep Buck from accumulating a lot of wealth and caused his wife some stress. When someone asked him his name he would reply: "Buck Caldwell by God" When someone would ask my older brother if he was related to Buck, he would drop his head and say, "Just a little bit". Buck's name was William Floyd Caldwell. Late one night they brought "Buck" body to my uncle Jim Burns's house to bury him in the Burns Cemetery. They ended up taking him to Stokes Cemetery. His wife, Lucinda was buried in what was called the "Poor Farm Cemetery". William F. Caldwell married Lucinda B. Barnett, 10/28/78. 1880 MARIES County census of Boone Twp.
