Miles Carroll the Patriarch of this family, married Ruah L. Setzer in 1834, and had 10 children. The last one, Cordelia Jane, was born in Missouri. Their first 4 children, Narcissa, Mary/Polly, Lucinda and Henry were born in North Carolina. 5 were born in Georgia, Martha, John, Levada, Daniel and William. The Patriotism, Loyaltity and Bravery of this family overwhelms this writer. In Peggy Smith Hake's "Pioneers Families of Miller County" she gives an account of this families exploits, that is second to none. They would give their Life, at the drop of a hat, for their beliefs and did. The women were as brave as the men and I believe in that particular day and time, they were even braver. I am a man, but I could never hold a light to the Pioneer Women who settled this Country and County of ours. Ruah Carroll (Seltser) and her girls are the perfect example of this. She ran off the murders, who killed her husband, with an axe. Her and the girls buried Miles Carroll where the Madden Cemetery is today. There weren't any "backhoes" or mechanical grave-diggers then. Those women dug that hole, and buried their father, with shovels and gardening tools. There is a big spring just east of Iberia, where the Militia used to camp. Every time I drive by there, I think of Miles, John Ferguson and all the other brave men who slept on the ground around that spring. At night, I close my eyes and can picture the glow of the campfires, with the shadowy figures gathered around them. There is a picture of this Militia hanging in the American Legion hall in Iberia. John M. Carroll is in this picture. He served with 12th Mo. Calvary, Company K. Henry W. Carroll also served in the 6th Mo. Calvary, Company H.
