Several people have done research on the Humphrey Family because they are so much a part Miller County. The Whitakers married every Humphrey they could find. My older cousins that were born at Brays Mill say there was a Humphrey girl on every hillside. That is not an exaggeration. There is a company from Tennessee, I think, that is buying all the old houses that were once log cabins and still have the log walls inside. They are stripping them down to the logs. Then they number each log, take it down and reconstruct it somewhere in Tennessee, I guess. I have been trying to get pictures of them. It is sad. I go to the old houses, that haven't been lived in for years, one month and the next month there is a double-wide mobile home, where the houses were. I was out in the woods this last week-end, looking for the old Martin "Mart" Humphrey place. Martin was married to Laura Belle RusselI, I just thought I would throw that in for Ellie's benefit. I found what's left of it. It's quiet now. I sat down and leaned back against a tree and closed my eyes and tried to remember how it was back then. Everyone should do this. Go to the old homeplace, sit down by a tree and remember what you knew and imagine what you've been told by your older brothers and sisters. Remember the Mondays, they were always the "Wash Day". Hand Pumping the water from the well or cistern, or bailing it up with a bucket and rope. Filling the tubs and the big black iron kettle. Then making the fire to heat that kettle. Mom and that big bar of FELS-NAPTHA soap and the scrub board. The clothes lines tied between the trees or from the house to a tree. One clothes line was to tie the toddlers to, so they could run up and down, but not run off and get hurt while Mom was busy. Remember the laughter of the children when they played games, there were few toys. Remember the sobs of the mothers as they watched their children die because Penicillin had not been invented yet. I was three weeks old when my brother Rex died at only three years. The men had a rough hard life, but it was the mothers who held the family together. I'm a man, close to 6 ft. and 230 lbs, but I have never been as strong, mentally or physically, as any woman who lived in the 1800s and early 1900s. I have seen tombstones in a row, where the mother had lost her first four babies, before 1 reached the teens. When you reached 13 then, you were an adult man and a woman. The buildings are going, but if you will remember them and their stories, the homes will be there, as long as someone remembers.
