LAWSON FAMILY:

There are at least 3 lines of Lawsons in Maries and Miller County. They are most certainly related, but no one is sure how close. They seem to have come here from Tennessee, but they apparently moved around quite a bit before deciding to settle here in Missouri. Probably the best known of these was the Nathan Lawson line. His parents are not known, but Nathan came here with his father. Nathan had at least six brothers and sisters when they came here. 1. An unknown sister who married a Rothwell. 2. Peggy Lawson married a James Rowden. It is not believed, they lived around here. 3. Jack Lawson married but no children. 4. David Lawson had 3 sons: Riley, Wiley (twins), and Calvin. Calvin had a daughter named Amanda who married William M. Shelton. This was the beginning of many Lawson-Shelton marriages. Calvin Lawson married Catherine Blankenship, May 5, 1858. Amanda E. Lawson married Wm. M. Shelton, Dec. 25, 1884. 5. George Lawson married Temperance Moss. George drowned in the Osage River, leaving one son; William E. (Bill Ed). William married Mary Shelton and had 8 children:John,George, Walter, Virgil, Charles, Ida (wife of Isaac Helton), Augusta (wife of Frank Henry), and Grace who married a Hughes. 6. Andrew also married a Moss and had one son named William. He married a second time and had 3 children: George, Louisa, and Bertie. Many of these descendants moved on to Oklahoma. Nathan Lawson was born March 15,1813, and he died in Miller County, May 19, 1875. He married Delilah Green who was born June 8, 1818 and died here Nov. 2, 1892. Dr. King says Nathan was born in Tenn. and Delilah in Indiana. The 1860 census of Miller County says different: Nathan age 47, (Ky.) Delilah age 42, (Ala.) James age 18, (Mo.) Hugh age 16, ( " ) Sarah age 14, ( " ) David age 11, ( " ) Mary age 9, ( " ) Rachel age 5, ( " ) John N. age 2, ( " ) Delilah M. age 2 ( " ) Rachel Shelton age 48 (Tenn.) was living with them. 1. James Lawson married a daughter of Wiley Dailey. He served 4 years in the Confederate Army. After the war he remained in Alabama and taught school. 2. George Lawson married Elmira Blankenship. He was in the Mo. State Guard and was wounded at Wilson's Creek. He died of that wound sometime later. He had 2 children: a. Delilah Ann married A. E. Rowden. (no children) SECOND LINE A second branch of Lawsons, but believed to be distant related to the first, was headed by James Madison Lawson. James was married to a Susan Knox, and was married when he came here. Nathan and James came here about the same time. James had at least 8 children: 1. Richard Lawson who married Nathan's daughter, Rachel. 1880 Maries Co. Census: Richard age 25, Rachel E. age 25, Andrew M. age 1, and a nephew George Wilson age 18. 1900 census: Richard age 45, Rachel age 45, Monroe age 21, James N. age 15, Louella B. age 7, Bessie age 16 (niece). 2. Mary E. Lawson first married Planks Lawson and had 3 children: William Planks, Sigel, and a daughter who was married to a Shepherd. Mary then married Jacob Baum and had 4 children: Fred, Lucinda, Mary and Sarah. Mary and Jacob were in the1880 census of Maries County: Jacob age 61, Mary age 40, Lucinda A. age 4, Mary E. age 3, and Charles F. age 2. Martha S. Wilson was living with them. Sigel Lawson age 18, his wife, Hulda age 16 and their daughter Rosetta age 11 months were also in this census. 3. Eliza J. Lawson married E. H. Dake. They had 7 children: Will, Harvey, Belle, Mary, Matilda, Perry, and Rebecca. In 1880 Miller Co. census: Elisha H. age 55, Eliza J. age 34, James W. age 10, Matilda J. age 8, Mary S. age 7, Harvey age 6, and Sarah E. age 11 months. 4. Sarah Lawson married Jesse C. Blankenship, Feb. 6, 1870. In 1900 census, Miller Co., they were: Jesse age 53, Sarah age 49, Lonia C. age 19, William N. age 18, James M. age 15, Jesse C. age 10, Sarah J. age 8, and Andrew age 6. 5. James M.Lawson Jr. married first to Arminta Hill. Their only child Susan married Charles Machon. James then married Oma Rowden and had 4 children: William Joseph, Laura, George W., and Addie. 1900 Maries Co. census: James M. age 46 (widowed), Laura age 23, George age 20, William G. age 18, and Sarah A. age 10. 6. Jeremiah Lawson married Sarah Wyrick. They had 6 children: Cora, Bessie, Susan, Myrtle, Ida, and Elizabeth. In the 1880 census of Maries Co.: Jeremiah age 19, Sarah age 17, and a nephew John Wilson age 18. 7. Matilda married John S. Wilson and had 7 children: Wesley, Sarah Martha, Malissa, Nathan, Elizabeth J., James and a daughter who married Abner Shelton. 8. Charles Lawson married Susan McDaniel, April 26, 1879. In 1900 census of Maries Co. Susan is listed as a widow age 39. The following are her children: Sarah L. age 20, William age 18, Sopha age 17, Amanda age 14, Richard age 11, Gracie age 2. In 1910 census Susan was listed as widow, age 60. Two children were with her: Gordon age 20 (Gordon married Gerzilla Burns and had a store in Vancleve), and Grace age 15. THIRD LINE Clem Lawson who also is believed to be related to the other lines. He could be the first Lawson to come to this area. His wife is not known. His children are: 1. Alex Lawson was born Aug. 5, 1842 and died Nov. 28, 1920. His wife was Ellen Duncan. They had 9 children: John C., William F., Linsay M., Roy H., Mrs. C. E. Shepherd, George W., Mrs. Nathan Lawson, Edward A. and Sarah. In 1880 census of Miller Co., they were: Alexander age 38, Ellen age 24, John age 13, William age 11, Lindsey age 10, Martha age 9, Mary A. age 8, Caroline age 7, Angeline age 5, and Annetta age 3. 2. Lindsay Lawson by his first marriage had a girl named Ellen who married Laughlin Sherrill. Lindsay married a second time and had a son named George Calvin Lawson. 3. Calvin Lawson was married to a woman named Evelyn. They had 3 children: William, Etta, and Mary Ellen. In 1880 Maries Co. census: Calvin age 38, Julia E. age 25, William L. age 5, Mary E. age 2. 4. Nancy Lawson married Elisha Lee. They had 4 children: Marion, Louis, Isaac, and Alice. Most of these older Lawsons are buried in the Jim Matt Lawson and the Dick Lawson cemeteries.
