I am not a member of the Shackleford family and I am not researching them. I am collecting as much information that is available to aid those who are researching this excellent family. I do not know many Shacklefords personally, but my people who have lived around them all their lives, speak very highly of them. Peggy Smith Hake has this family in her book "Pioneers of Miller County" and she takes them back to the 1600s in England. I am going to give you a summary of that information, Census and Marriage records and whatever else I can find. I will start with Peggy's information and it don't get no better than that. The Shackleford family in Miller County are descendants of Roger and Mary Shackleford who came to America form Essex England in 1628. They lived in King & Queen County of Virginia and died there. Their children were: James, Francis, John, Zachariah, Benjamin, Charles, Roger, Willima, Henry & Robert. Francis married Sarah Virginia Lewis and had 3 children: John, Ann, Roger. Their son Roger married Carey Baker and had these children: John, William, Sarah, Roger, Betty, Richard, James & Robinson. Francis & Sarah's grandson Roger, married Nancy Ann Carter and their children were: Richard, William, John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Roger the fourth, Thomas, Nancy Ann, Carter, Edward, James, & Adeline. William Shackleford, son of Roger & Nancy, married Elizabeth/Betsy Moore and they had 17 children, Some of which are: Nancy 1795/1891, Robinson 1797/1851, George T. 1799/1872, Mary/Polly born 1803, Allen born 1801, Merlin born 1804, Sabrina born 1814, William born 1816, Elizabeth born 1818, Lucy born 1820, Francine born 1821, James born 1822, and Richard born 1824. Merlin Shackleford, son of William and Betsy Moore, married a woman named Sarah/Sally Anderson. Anderson could have been Sarah/Sally's married name, some think she was born a Bailey. Merlin died in Louisville Ky. Sarah/Sally came to Miller County with the Julius Bailey Family. It is believed that Julius was her brother. Merlin & Sarah/Sally had the following children: Elizabeth(John West), William G. (married Susan Jane & Margaret Smith Forrester) Richard Merrell (married Mary Forrester), Sarah A.(married John Henry Aust), Susan Jane married James Forrester), Allen married Elizabeth Murphy), and James H. Shackleford married Susan Forrester. These are the Shacklefords that started showing up in the following Miller county census.
