I have been reluctant to do the Smiths. They are so many of them for one thing and this is Peggy Smith Hake's territory not mine. Another thing that is confusing, is there are so many children scattered with various families in the early years of Miller County. The first Smith marriage recorded in Miller County is the marriage of Michael Smith to Emeline Barnhart, 9/3/1839. However they were not listed in the 1840 census. The only Smith listed in that census was Lewis Smith and his wife. I believe this the Lewis Smith in question. Lewis Smith married Jane Gibson, 3/5/1840. They were in their teens, possibly 20. I believe their are at least three lines of Smiths. I tried to separate them by the townships they settled in. It seems the different lines came from different places and settled in different townships. Although the "Richwood" Smiths were probably not the first Smiths, in Miller County, they are for sure the largest. Peggy Smith Hake's books helped me keep this in some sort of order. 1850 census: Champ Smith age 39 (Tn) (must have been in Mo. at least 5 yrs.)
