I have got to be a glutton for punishment to take on this project because of the size of the Wilson families in both Maries and Miller Counties. Some of them are my relatives. They have been here since the1830s and some are long since gone. They are not really gone if someone remembers and I am going to try to bring back memories for some. I will use Dr. King's book, the census records, marriage records etc. In the 1840 census there were 8 families of Wilsons in Miller County. Since the County wasn't formed until 1837, I guess you would say these are the pioneers. The majority of the Wisons who settled Miller County came here from Kentucky while the Marie County Wilsons came from Tennessee. It's obvious they are still related by the similarity in their children's names. People came down the Ohio and the Tennessee Rivers to Kentucky, Illinois and Tennessee because that was the easiest way to come. There is a place across the Mississippi River from the "Bootheel" of Missouri, where you can stand with one foot in Illinois and one foot in Tennessee, with Kentucky between your legs. MARIES COUNTY: The first Wilson of record here was Joseph Wilson and his wife Nancy Monroe, who he married in McMinn County Tennessee on May 3, 1833. Joseph was born in Kentucky, 11/12/1812. He died in Maries County, 10/1/1875. Nancy was born in Tennessee, 9/20/1814. She also died here,1/26/1902. They came here in 12/3/1838. Their children are as follows: Elizabeth Jane Wilson, bn. 1834. She married Otto Curtman, 10/21/58. James Monroe Wilson, bn. 2/12/36-1/9/1929. He md. Howard married Hester Vaughan and they both died last year. Two lovely people. I miss them both. Wilson age 25 Sarah age 24 George age 2 David W. age 5 months. SECOND LINE OF WILSONS: James G. Wilson came here about the same time as Joseph and is believed related. James married Martha Cansler. They had 5 children: Texas, Tennesee, Susan, Rufus and Marion. I will try to keep his children separate from Josephs. Martha married James Burns after James Wilson died. Tennessee married Lewis C. Lee, 4/21/1878. 1880 census: Lewis C. Lee age 23 Tennessee age 21 Rufus and Texas are believed to have moved to Camden County. In the 1880 census: Martha Susan Wilson age 19 (step-dau) was living with the James Burns family. It is believed Susan married William Earp about this time. William Earp age 22 was living with next door to Marion Wilson with a Martin family. Martha Susan Wilson married William Earp. (by G. B. Hickey) ?????. 1880 census: F. Marion Wilson age 25 Emeline (Crismon) age 22 Harriet age 2 Gabriel J. age 6 months. Marion Wilson to Emeline Crismon, 10/15/1876. The preceeding Wilsons are to my knowledge related. Others came here much later and it is unlikely they are related. They didn't come from the same place in Tennessee and the names of their children don't correspond with these.
