WOODY FAMILY:

This look-up is a work of love. The Woody's have lived in the Vancleve Area of Maries County for 150 years. At first there were only birds to send beautiful melodies through those hills. Then the Woodys, Heltons and the Jones married into each other and that all changed. If you doubt what I say, come to the Campground Church Homecoming, the second Sunday of September every year. They have been singing up at the Ricker Chapel for their Homecoming, the last couple of years. Ricker's Chapel is at the top of the hill in downtown Vancleve, right up from where the store used to be. If you would roll a ball down the hill, and it did'nt hit a tree or Mildred Ricker on her 4-wheel motor-cycle, it would run in the door of Campground Church. Mildred was born in 1911 and I've always worried that she was going to run off and join the "Hells Angels" but so far she never has. I guess fishing with her grand-kids, hunting mushrooms, picking up walnuts, playing piano at the church, writing a column for newspaper and looking in on the Old Folks, keeps her pretty busy. She's related to the Woodys thru her husband.

Jennings Woody who is 96 and I won't dare arm wrestle with him, owned an old steam-operated threshing machine. It was the only one in that part of the county. You had to book yourself for a certain week, to get your wheat threshed. My dad has worked on that old threshing machine at about every farm around there. When it was your week, everybody came to you farm and helped you and when it was their time, you went over there. The night before, you would set up saw-horses with boards across them, to make tables. The women would come and bring food the next morning while the men worked in the fields. What a meal that was!!

Most of the Woodys settled in Maries County, but around 1900 some of them spilled over in Miller County. One of them, Davis Woody married Dad's sister Josephine Whitaker. There are several Davis Woodys. I'll start with one in Maries County.
